The dogs should look like foxes to fit their dens and be able to maneuver there. A compact and flexible body with a narrow chest and sloping shoulders characterizes this breed. Aggressiveness, alertness and self-confidence typical for the breed help in hunting greatly.

This breed has been developed in England in the 19th century specially for working red fox above and below ground. The breed was named after a parson who was very interested in hunting and began to develop the dogs with necessary features.
