Jack Russell Terriers puppies should be acquired from reputable breeders who test their stock for inherited diseases and breed only sound dogs. Along the history, breeders strived to eliminate inborn diseases in the breed and have finally produced an easy to keep dog with few health problems.
Unfortunately, the number of breedings has increased of late with the rise of the breed's popularity. Jack Russell Terrier's success in media, in particular in movies and commercials, has had some negative effect on the breed. The public has virtually fallen in love with this cute dog. The fact that many celebrities own Jack Russells and appear here and there accompanied by their pets has fueled the desire to buy a Jack Russell Terrier puppy.
As the result, inexperienced breeders have bred their dogs with no regard to genetics and personality traits of the breeding stock. The Jack Russell Terrier gene pool has suffered some of late, which has aroused a great concern of breed adherents. They state that Jack Russell's personality features have suffered the most. The number of dogs with neurotic traits is growing at an alarming rate.
Jack Russell Terriers - Puppies - Handling the Situation
The Jack Russell Terrier Club of America promotes the breed through education of breeders and owners. It does not approve of breedings that are carried out of fun, desire to show children the miracle of birth, and alike motives. The largest National breed registry will not register litters only because the parent dogs are registered with the organization.
Jack Russell Terriers are registered not sooner than at the age of 12 months old. A certified veterinarian should test puppies. A four-generation pedigree is also necessary to be registered with the JRTCA. Note that the JRTCA does not endorse the UKC registration and will not accept breeders affiliated with the United Kennel Club. This holds true for members of the Jack Russell Terrier Breeder's Association and the Parson Jack Russell Terrier Club.
The goal is to eliminate inherited diseases in the breed and preserve the Jack Russell Terrier as a working dog. The JRTCA is not solitary in its attempts to protect the breed from ending up on the show ring. Most of breed clubs around the world support the JRTCA's practices.
